Marilyn Baissa, Pastor

Marilyn Baissa is the Pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church.  Marilyn first heard God’s call to ministry when, as a young college student,  she met Dr. Martin Luther King.  She has never forgotten his advice “to follow Christ and seek justice.”  “But,” says Marilyn, “for many years I thought that following Christ and seeking justice were two separate tasks.”  Marilyn sought justice as a professor of Government and African-American studies and Director of International Programs at Utica College for over 20 years.  But the call to follow Christ continued to become stronger and stronger and eventually took Marilyn to seminary and full time ministry.

Marilyn is passionate about keeping the 21st century church on the cutting edge, at the intersection between Christ and contemporary culture, transforming people so that they can transform the world.  She believes that is best accomplished through multicultural, multi-sensory worship celebration, and in leading people to find their purpose and their gifts which they will use to carry out God’s call to mission and ministry in the community and the world.  She believes that community is best developed in small cell groups which can nurture and develop and support each individual and each family as well as in weekly Spirit filled worship celebrations.

Marilyn has a BA from Lycoming College,  a Master of Divinity Degree from Colgate Crozier Rochester Theological Seminary, and both a Masters and Doctoral degree from George Washington University.

Marilyn’s favorite scripture is from Romans 8, reminding us that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God through Christ Jesus our Lord.
